Josh  > Nature > A Summer on Moosilauke
This past summer (05X) I spent the summer as the Alpine Steward on top of Mt. Moosilauke. I stayed at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge and hiked the mountain every day - over 50 times. I got to know the mountain pretty well, and I tried to capture some of what I learned in pictures.

Josh > On my second day of work, just as I summited Moosilauke, I spotted two Moose on the east side of the alpine area. The cow and calf, about 25 yards from me, didn't notice me for about ten seconds, but then they ran.
Josh > I crossed the Baker River hiking to work every day. One day I decided to get a different view of the river, getting down into it. With a five second exposure, I really got a different view of it.
Josh > In and out of the clouds the whole day, one cloud went straight through the mountain, and then was visible as it cleared.
Josh > One day I became fascinated with the lines of the mountain. The flow from the main summit to the South Peak particularly struck me. I tried to capture it here.
Josh > I love the cairns on the summit of the mountain. Some are over one hundred years old. Here are two (the oldest on the mountain on the left) in the foreground, with the Kinsmans and Franconia Ridge in the background.
Josh > Every fourth of July, a hoard of Dartmouth students converge on the summit to watch the fireworks in the surrounding cities. Just as amazing as the fireworks themselves, though, is the people on the top.
Josh > Another day in and out of the clouds. I enjoy days like this just as much as the clearest of days. This was one of the best of the in-and-out type days.
Josh > Spending over 50 days on the mountain this summer, I learned to appreciate atypical beauty - such as that of the summit signs themselves.
Josh > An eerie day on the summit. The mountain has many moods - happy, sad, jealous, etc. Sometimes it is just creepy. Hard to capture such a feeling, however.
